ABOUT US

Showing with the OCEA we compete against other Universities in the north zone. Each show will be an equitation catch riding competition with four different divisions; Entry (max height 18"), Novice (max height 2'3"), Intermediate (max height 2'9"), and open (max height 3'). As a team we also have  lessons at Karuka Equestrian with Angela Vandenhurk.

OCEA SHOW STRUCTURE

At the OCEA shows, you will be randomly assigned a different horse for each class (Over Fences and Under Saddle). You will be given a written description of the horse prior to your class and you have the opportunity to watch a warm up rider ride and complete the course on your assigned mount. This is incredibly important as this is all the information you will be given prior to you riding the horse and being judged.

Over Fences

You will not be given a warm up, or any warm up fences. Once mounted you will be led directly into the ring, and you will begin your course. Course walk is available before each division and all our riders are required to walk the course.

Under Saddle

You will be led on a lead line prior to your class, and at this time you can only hold the reins at the buckle. When all horses and the judge are ready, you will be allowed to pick up your reins and be unclipped from the lead line. You will then begin to be judged. Again, you will not be given a warm up prior, and you will be on a different mount from your O/F round. Depending on your order, you may also get to watch other competitors (as most flats are split up into 2 or 3 groups). Networking comes in handy if you can get tips on the horse from the other competitors.

Each rider competing will get one O/F round and one U/S round with ribbons for both. There are ribbons awarded to Division Champion, Reserve Champion, Overall High Point Rider, Overall Reserve High Point Rider and team ribbons as well. There’s also a leaderboard with Year End Awards in addition to Finals. Additionally, we do independent Year End Awards for our team exclusively.
